Principal’s Report

Welcome back everyone, for another term of learning and fun at Sacred Heart. We have had a busy first week, settling students back into classroom routines, welcoming new students, participating in the Voices of War Workshop, marching for ANZAC day and completing the Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN online practice test. Due to the beautiful rain we received, we had to postpone our cross-country event. Please see the cross-country section of the newsletter for updated details.

This week we welcome several visitors to our school. Brett Leadbetter has been supporting our school with the wellbeing project for over 12 months by assisting teachers and school officers in implementing the Essential Skills to Classroom Management. During Brett’s visit he profiles teachers and provides feedback on what practices are working well and what essential skills might be valuable to implement. Brett has commented on our school improvement in the areas of peer assistance and teamwork, level of student engagement and overall feel of calm across all classrooms.

Sue Keefer, our school Literacy coach, is also visiting this week. She will be working with teachers on the implementation and development of our Diocesan Reading Improvement Strategy and Spelling and Phonics Program. Our school goals for Term 2 include continuing to embed high yield practices, evaluating student data to inform teaching practices and student reading goals, development of the stamina reading and writing activities and implementation of QAR questioning strategies into all reading lessons. We continue to place high importance on reading as it is a skill we require for all areas of learning.

Parent/Teacher interviews are held twice a year in Term 2 and Term 4. These take place after school and run for 15 minutes. They are a valuable opportunity for parents to discuss their child/children progress across all aspects of school life. Interviews will be taking place in Week 4 of this Term (May 13th- May 17th). I encourage every parent to make an appointment. Please see or phone Mrs Crick to book an interview time.

Please ensure you read the newsletter through thoroughly to check out all the up and coming events for Term 2. I wish Ava Anderson, Bella Anderson, Kellie Brain and Paige Mills all the best for their regional Touch Football and Netball tirals they head off to this Friday and next Wednesday. I am sure you will represent our district with pride.

All the best.

Prep/1 News

Welcome to term 2 in the Prep/1 class. This term we are beginning new units for each subject and the focus in on animals and dinosaurs. In English we are learning to identify and use nouns and verbs, as well as sequence a variety of our favourite stories. In Science and Hass, we are exploring the life of dinosaurs and where they lived in Queensland. We will be going on a fossil hunt around the school and using iPad technologies to record our expedition. The focus for Religion this term, is the teaching and learning of sacraments and what it means to be baptised and part of our church. We will also be deconstructing the life and teachings of Jesus through the use of scripture readings. With the athletics carnival coming up this term, students will be participating in weekly practices of the events during HPE lessons.

On another exciting note, you may have seen an extra teacher in the Prep/1 classroom this week. Miss Mann is joining our class for the next 3 weeks to complete her practicum with the University of Southern Queensland. We welcome Miss Mann to our class and look forward to her creative and enjoyable lessons.

Year 2/3 News

It is great to see all the smiling faces of our Year 2 and 3 students back at Sacred Heart for another action packed term. It seems everyone is refreshed and ready to carry on our great work from the previous Term. Parent teacher interviews are swiftly approaching, so it will be great to touch base and discuss each students progress. Students have had some fun stories to tell about their School Holidays which has helped kickstart this Term.

In Science the students will be investigating why we have night and day and in Maths the students will ordering and representing fractions. Term 2 is a very exciting time, in visual arts we will be designing a Cunnamulla themed project to display at the show. In religion students will be exploring the 7 sacraments. We are looking forward to going to the Cosmos Centre this term to further our science studies and wish the year 3’s and 5’s the best of luck with NAPLAN in week 4.

Year 5/6 News

What an amazing first week back! I couldn’t have asked for more from the 5/6 class. We have started our science topic for this term which is Earth and Space. We completed a mind-map of information which we already know about space and one showing what we would like to find out about space. Our findings show we have a good understanding of Space so far and we are keen to find out so much more! We have settled into the new term fantastically and came back with a learning frame of mind. Well done team!

It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress. At the classroom level it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress.
