Principal’s Report

Last Sunday, we acknowledged, thanked and celebrated all the wonderful mothers, aunties and grandmothers in our lives. Through the love they show, the way they nurture and care for us, mothers help us understand what God is like. We thank all the important women in our lives for their continued love and endless support they offer each and every day to help us truly meet our full potential. We also remember the mothers who aren't always with us and those who are in heaven. May they all be blessed.

This week, our Year 3 and 5 students will be completing the NAPLAN online test. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress. At the classroom level it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress. The teachers having been working hard to ensure our students are prepared to complete the test in an online environment, as this is the first year Sacred Heart have completed the test in this form. It is important our students get a good night’s sleep and eat a hearty breakfast. The data collected from these tests provides valuable information for teachers to direct future teaching and learning. Results from the test will be released late in term 3.

We thank Miss Terrisha Mann, our visiting Prac student from University of Southern Queensland Toowoomba for all her hard work and dedication in the Prep/1 classroom. I am sure she has learnt a lot from our Mrs Standfield and our students during her three weeks with us. We look forward to your next practicum visit in August.

Congratulations to Miss Shae Sor`e who attended her graduation ceremony last week at the Australian Catholic University. You should be very proud of your achievements.

Miss Sore’ at her Graduation Ceremony

Happy learning.

Prep/1 News

Welcome to week 4! I hope all the mothers of the class had a lovely Mother’s Day and enjoyed the crafty presents made by Prep/1 students last week. Thank you to all who attended the Mother’s Day liturgy, the students did a fantastic job sharing their love for the special lady in their life. This week is a busy week with parent/teacher interviews taking place. I would love to see all of you there to share the successes of your child and discuss where to from here.

Moving on to classroom happenings and what the students will be up to in the coming weeks. Assessment in some subject areas are beginning to take place, with a big focus on reading improvement strategies. Students will be tested on their reading next week, so be sure to continue reading books and sight words each night to assist in this area. Miss Mann, our prac teacher, will be leaving us this week to return to Toowoomba. We thank her for her contributions to our class and wish her well with her future studies.

One last reminder to parents is to continue bringing back library books that are borrowed each week. Library day will occur on a Tuesday or Wednesday, so it’s a good idea to bring them back on Mondays.

Year 2/3 News

Greetings from Year 2/3 as Term 2 is quickly hustling along. All students have settled back into their school work, this is a great reflection on their positive progress made this year so far. We are in the midst of our parent teacher interviews and it has been great to touch base with parents and talk about the positive strides that have been made. It is important as the year progresses that parents feel at ease to come to me and discuss anything that may arise, which is welcomed.

Year 3/4 News

Year 3-4 have been extremely busy this past fortnight learning about the solar system, the students have investigated the size and shape of planets and have been researching day and night. In English, students are developing the knowledge and understanding to write their very own information text about a chosen neighbouring country to Australia. Moreover, in Health the students have been focusing on health messages and personal strengths, identifying ways they can use these strengths to spread positivity at school and in the community. We wish all of our year 3 students the best of luck with NAPLAN and are very proud of everyone’s efforts at cross county and districts!

Year 5/6 News

This week in science we have been exploring Earth and Space. We discovered the phases of the moon and why we see the moon in different shapes throughout the month. It was a little mind-blowing but we got there in the end! We have started to look at fractions this week in maths and began with converting them to decimals. Our brains were challenged immensely but we persevered and got there in the end. Over the coming weeks we will be starting to compare, order, simplify, add and subtract fractions.

Our Year 2-6 students have been invited to participate in the Queensland Maroon’s Fan Day on Tuesday 28th May in Charleville. Mother’s Day Liturgy

Last Friday 10th May, we celebrated our loving mothers, grandmothers, nannas and aunties in our lives. The Prep/1 class held a beautiful liturgy thanking our mothers for all they do for us each and every day.

A Prayer for My Mum

Dear God, I gratefully thank you,
for giving me my mum.
You must really love me,
because you gave me the best you had.
Watch over her and bless her Lord,
and keep her in your care.
May she feel my love for her,
In my humble and heartfelt prayer.
