Principal’s Report

Staffing 2021

We are still in the process of finalising staffing for 2021. At this stage we are delighted that Mrs Shellshear will remain at Sacred Heart next year. Unfortunately, we will be farewelling Miss Cornelius at the end of this year as she will be relocating back to Brisbane to be closer to family. Miss Cornelius has been a wonderful addition to our school community and we sincerely thank her for her positive impact on the teaching and learning at Sacred Heart.

Two teachers have already been appointed for next year, Miss Aimee Bretheron and Miss Lilly Daly who are currently completing their internships in TCSO schools in Charleville and Mitchell. We are planning on providing induction programs next Term. Class structures, sizes and school officers are yet to be confirmed.

Building Project

I am very excited to announce that building work on the new library, toilet block and undercover area will begin this Thursday 3rd September. Fencing will be in place, so students are aware of the new ‘no go zones’ to ensure safety. During the build, the back entry used for the tuckshop will no longer be accessible. This will be used for McNab deliveries only.

I would like to sincerely thank Mrs Fett, Mrs Fagan, Mrs Haig and Mrs Crick for all the work they have put into relocating and cleaning out the old library. It was definitely a big job, so I sincerely thank you! We are very much looking forward to our new learning space.

Prep 2021 Transition

The Kindy and Prep students thoroughly enjoyed their Teddy Bears Picnic together. The Preps were so excited they waited at the gate for them to wave them in.

Prep/1 News

Here in Prep/1 we have all been working hard to achieve excellence in our learning even though students are tired as we get to the end of the Term. Students have been working hard to make connections and are working to become independent learners. We have had some wonderful success in reading this Term, with all students smashing personal reading goals and achieving some very impressive reading results. Go Prep/1! As we near the end of Term, we will be completing assessment pieces for each subject area. Please ensure students are having a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast so they can do their very best at school.

Students are reminded to complete their homework every week, so they can participate in ‘Rewards’ on a Friday afternoon. Library borrowing occurs every Friday, so please ensure students are bringing their Library bags to school so they can borrow new books on a Friday morning. Students are also encouraged to read every night to a known adult to keep up those great reading results. Keep up the great work Prep/1 and God bless you.

Year 2 News

Because we are well past midterm, we’ve been busy making sure we’re all up to date with our work. Difficult to believe that we are edging closer to term four, which means the children are almost ready to progress to the next year level.

We have continued with our number work in maths and are exploring flip, slide and turn. We have begun our research on a chosen machine in English and are using both online information and books from the library to find answers to our five W and H questions. Listening to Sr Maureen tell us about her visit to Israel has helped us understand the country where Jesus was born, grew up and taught.

We had a visit from Annie during the week who spoke to the class on road safety as it was Road Safety Week. Always good to refresh our memories and consolidate our knowledge of keeping safe. Next week we’ll be continuing on our current themes, finishing up as the term comes to a close and assessing. The children have all worked very hard this term and are beginning to get tired, but their efforts were rewarded with some ‘fun’ activities on Friday. We’ve had some wonderful reading results and they well and truly deserved a reward.

Year 3/4 News

Exciting week 8 and 9! The students have been hard at work putting their knowledge and understanding into practise. It is really important that all students come to school during Week 8 and 9 as during this time we will be working on assessment. The students have started writing their persuasive monologue for English, drama and HASS and are about to start building ships in design technology that include catapults! The students need to bring materials in from home to make these boats (plastic bottles, butter/ ice-cream containers etc..) if you are unable to source anything for your child please let me know so I can collect it for them. In week 9, the students will be filming and editing a media production of themselves performing a monologue as a convict in Britain 1770! If you could send any old looking clothing in with your child in a labelled bag to wear as a costume that would be much appreciated!

Please contact the office to make an appointment. Transition days will be held in Term 4.

Effective Hand Hygiene is Vital

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to evolve, it is important to remember that effective hand and sneeze/cough hygiene is the best defence against viruses and can help prevent the spread of illness.

Lead by example and encourage your children to:

  • wash their hands regularly with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • use alcohol-based hand sanitiser if soap is not available
  • cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of their elbow
  • dispose of tissues in the bin immediately
  • remind students not to share food
  • if they’re unwell, stay at home and avoid contact with others such as touching, kissing or hugging.

Check out the 20 second routine video for effective handwashing.

Student Protection

At Sacred Heart the safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority. All children should grow up free of violence or exploitation and be able to learn in a safe and supported environment. Schools have several specific child protection reporting obligations that are detailed in our Student Protection Processes and Guidelines.

If a student wants to talk to someone about harm, abuse or inappropriate behaviour toward themselves or others, they can speak to a trusted staff member or one of our School Student Protection Contacts (SSPCs). The SSPCs receive additional training and are identified in the student protection posters displayed around the school.

Summary documents have been developed for parents and caregivers about our student protection obligations and our broader strategy for maintaining safe school environments.

Further information on all of the above topics can be found on the Toowoomba Catholic Schools website at the link below:

https://www.twb.catholic.edu.au/parents-and-community/student-protection/

Our Schools Student Protection Contacts are:

Mrs Cara Haig (Deputy / LST)
Mrs Carolyn Crick (Administration Officer)
Mr Mike Thomason (School Guidance Counsellor)
